“Wednesday A Holiday”

How do you celebrate Christmas Day and New Year’s Day on a Wednesday??? It is not convenient. For those of you who work Monday through Friday jobs, what do you do? It is not like it is a Monday or a Friday where you can have an extended weekend. Even the Malls are trying to decide where and how you are to shop. At this writing you have already figured out how to celebrate Christmas and now here comes New Years.

This year one of the things that I have been thinking about is how much we take the reasons of the celebrations for granted. We get caught up in the “to do list” and realize that we have lost sight of these special days in the year. One of the benefits of having them on a Wednesday is that we really have to THINK about them. Our plans take on new meaning. The interruption of our week forces us to reevaluate what is our normal routine. Nothing is as it should be. If family are coming, is the plan for before or after. If you are planning on going out for New Year’s Eve it is funny think of going to a party on a Tuesday night.

Here is the thing…God lives in the interruptions…. When I was at seminary a professor once told the class not to be frustrated with all of the things that weren’t getting done because all of those other people, issues, and things were getting in the way. He reminded us that those interruptions were what God intended for you to do that day. It is the interruptions that are your calling.

Some of us have already begun to make plans for what we will be accomplishing in 2020. You know, planning trips to see grand kids, perhaps a vacation, maybe even a house project or 2. You get the idea. And who knows it may actually happen. Someone once said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans!”

One of the great things about living in the love and family of God is that we know that whatever happens we are not going through this life alone. We don’t know what the coming year will bring. None of us have a crystal ball. But we are walking hand in hand with someone who does. Years ago, I came to understand that we do not know what our futures will hold, but we know the one who holds our futures.

Have a great year of Our Lord, 2020!!
